KINROSS Wolaroi School enjoyed its best State Rowing Championships over the weekend as the Orange club recorded eight podium finishes on their way to becoming fourth-best club overall at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith.
The students picked up three gold medals, three silver and two bronze at the two-day regatta to finish fourth behind Sydney University and University of Queensland in the club championship.
Kinross coach Joe Donnelly is overjoyed with the results, which he considers to be the best in the club’s short history.
“All of the schools and everybody was at this and it’s a lot tougher competition,” Donnelly said. “The parents and the kids were over the moon.
“It’s the best results the club has got in six years.”
The crew of Michael Nagy, Matthew Simpson, Daniel Whitehead, Declan Michell and cox Kathryn Pasquali won the schoolboys coxed IV in what is believed to be the first time a non-GPS school has claimed the event.
Kinross were neck-and-neck with Canberra Grammar School over the final 1000m before the Orange school edged ahead to win by 0.93 seconds.
The crew of Eloise Daniel, Briony Wills, Candice Williams, Harriet Hain and cox Sam Gersbach made it a double for Kinross as they took out the schoolgirls coxed IV as well.
Both crews then backed up in the under 19 coxed IV, with the boys winning silver and the girls bronze.
Kinross’ third gold came in the under 16 boys coxless quad scull when Eden Taylorwood-Roe, Tom Whitehead, Luke Weekes and Charles McIntosh held off Hunter Valley Grammar School to win by a miserly 0.91 seconds.
Taylorwood-Roe and Whitehead also picked up a silver medal in the under 16 boys double scull, while Angus Whittaker and Matt Haege matched that achievement in the under 17 boys double scull.
Candice Williams enjoyed individual success as she earned a bronze in the schoolgirls single scull.
Kinross rowers will now head to Canberra in a fortnight for the Independent Schools Association Regatta before contesting the National Rowing Championships in Victoria in early March.
