DARTS

THE Victoria Socialites started strongly to match the Royal Spitfires in the singles in the men’s A grade darts competition but were shot down in the doubles and triples.

The Spitfires won the match 8-3 after the score was even at 3-all after the singles but the Socialities could not win any more games.

Aaron Osborne added another 180 to his collection with a 100, 125 and 140.

The other Spitfires to fire were Dave Whitmore (3x100, 125, 140), Mark Wiegold (2x100, 140), Rod Southwell (100, 135, 2x140) and Bruce Osborne (119).

The Socialites as usual put up a good fight with top scorers Ben McIntosh (104, 140), Damien Caughlan (4x100, 140), Norm Foley (3x100, 121) and Ian Thomas (100, 124).

The luckless Great Western Tigers had another loss, this time 8-3 to premiers Dad and Daves.

The games were close, though, and again it was the player to hit the double first and the Tigers missed by a wire or hit the one next door.

But the Dad and Daves are a good team all the way through and play consistent darts for the entire match, always making them a tough opponent to beat.

Their top scorers were Rob Crowe (174), Brad White (121, 123, 125), John Fabar (120, 123), Rex Fitzpatrick (126, 101 peg out), Wayne Wallace (4x100) and Scott Griffiths, who had a big night with two 100s, 101, 123 and 125.

Barry Wicks with four 100s and three 140s and John Prior with five 100s and two 140s starred for the Tigers.

It was John Prior and Tim Downey who broke the drought with a good doubles win after the Tigers’ nightmare run of losing 17 games straight.

The other Tigers to get top scores were Bill Gayford (2x140, 121, 100), Tim Downey (121, 100) and Gordon Crisp (100).

The Carrington Redbacks went on their winning way, this time finishing 8-3 over the Ophir Gold Diggers, who had matched them 3-all in the singles but like the Socialites, could not go on with it.

For the Redbacks Peter Hamilton had three 100s, 103 and 120, Greg Sharkey (100, 121, 100 peg out), Dennis Horton (2x100, 120, 149), Aaron Jones (2x100), Dave Power (140) and John Kirkwood (100, 140).

The Gold Diggers’ John Cooper showed he still had it with a big 180 and two 100s.

The other big scorers were Max Dennis (2x100, 101, 120, 140), Mark Williams (100, 140), Darren Townsend (100, 122, 125), Matthew Caughlan (101) and Mick White (115, 140).

IN B grade the Metro Sea Hunters had a solid 8-3 win over the Great Western Slammers after taking all the singles for a 6-0 lead.

The Slammers fired back, winning the three doubles, but then lost the two triples.

Top scorers for the Sea Hunters were Jason Hurford (4x100), Chris Kenna (2x100), Michael Salmon (101) and Brian Hardy (140).

For the Slammers, Ross Bryant hit 108 and Nathan Parkes 100.

Because of renovations at the Royal, the Half Dozen and the Carrington Crusaders will play tonight, while the Ophir Nuggets had the bye.

IN C grade the Victoria DTs had a solid 7-4 win over the Great Western Devils.

The DTs took the singles 4-2, lost the first two doubles, won the third and then won both triples.

For the DTs Roy Leonard with 137 and Shane McKeown (100) top scored.

The Devils’ best scores were hit by Luke Pecoski (100), Mick Portelle (100), Rob George (136) and Doug Heffernan (100, 119).

In the other match the Royal Ts were too strong for the Great Western D and Ds, winning 7-4 after taking a 5-1 lead in the singles.

Top scorers were Daniel Allen (2x100), Mark Leonard (125, 140), Peter Jordan (100) and Steve Leonard (100, 2x140).

For the D and Ds Max Meehan hit 100 and Robert Jarvis 102.
