MEDALS and records was the theme for Orange shooters Dean Brus, Max Wicks and David Oates at the ACT Pistol Championships on the weekend.
All three shooters were using the championships as a hit-out before the Pistol Australia National Championships next month.
Brus and Oates are part of the NSW team and Wicks is trying to post scores good enough to make his way into the 2007 NSW side.
Brus set a high standard in Canberra shooting an ACT record 641 out of 650 to win the master grade 25m service pistol on Saturday.
Brus was 19 shots ahead of Parkes' Greg Armstrong who won silver with 624 and Oates grabbed bronze with 614. Wicks finished out of the medals with his 609.
Brus bagged a second gold when he won the master grade service pistol with 874/900.
Oates won silver with 871 and Armstrong was third with 861.
Wicks picked up the gold medal in the A grade service pistol with 848.
On Sunday Brus won the master grade service pistol unrestricted with 882/900. Armstrong was second with 880 and Oates was third with 879.
Wicks finished out of the medals in the A grade service pistol unrestricted with 857.
Breaking the ACT 25m service pistol record has given Brus confidence to win his fourth consecutive national 25m service pistol title.
"I'm the only one in Australia shooting 640s," Brus said.
"We've been closely watching the form of the other shooters around the country on the internet. Hopefully this won't lead up to too much pressure on the day."
Brus, who shoots with the support of the Orange Ex-Services Club, is also looking forward to shooting in the WA 1500.
The WA 1500 is an event which is shot internationally and this will be the first time it is shot in the Australian championships.
The national championships will be held in Wagga Wagga on April 8-11.
