ORANGE shooter Dean Brus won his fourth NSW Amateur Pistol Association state service pistol title at Dubbo on the weekend.
Competitors shot over two days with the best aggregate score declared the winner in each grade.
Brus was in second place in the masters service pistol after Saturday's round having shot 624 out of 650 and trailed the leader by just one point.
On Sunday Brus showed why he had already won three titles producing a 631 which is only one point off the state record.
"That gave me 1255 to win," Brus said.
"I've noticed it's the highest aggregate on the perpetual trophy too."
During the first section on Saturday Brus shot 250 out of 250 which he has never done before in competition or practise.
Brus, who was shooting for Hawkesbury River Projectiles and Orange Ex-Services Club, was pushed by Parkes' Greg Armstrong who was only two points behind Brus after Saturday's round.
On Sunday Armstrong shot a 627 to finish second outright on 1249.
Orange's Max Wicks finished third in A grade after shooting 581 on Saturday and 574 on Sunday for a 1155 total.
Fellow Orange shooter Dave Oates also shot in A grade but had problems with his new gun on Saturday when the trigger jammed and he shot 496.
He fixed the problem on Sunday and shot 609 but his first round meant his 1105 total kept him out of the placings.
Orange Pistol Club is now preparing to host the second half of the state titles for service pistol and service pistol unrestricted on August 28 and 29.
The club has been working hard to rebuild their range since it burned down in February in a bush fire but now it is running and only needs some finishing touches according to Brus.
"On Saturday we're going to have a fairly involved working bee and then on Sunday I'm holding a regional training day," Brus said.
"We'll test all three ranges to make sure all the mechanics are working ok. It's nice to know we've got the ranges in operation so if we get some (bad) weather we can still have the shoot in a fortnight."
