Ford, Hamilton beat champs to sit on Golden Eagle perch

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
IT was the dream final for yesterday’s Chris Gryllis Real Estate Golden Eagle Pairs Classic.

Defending champions Bernie Diduszko and Gerard Beath went up against 2010 winners Bob Hamilton and George Ford.

And it was a dream finish for Hamilton and Ford as they won the final 25-14 at Orange City Bowling Club to give them their second win from three Eagle attempts.

“I’m speechless,” Hamilton smiled.

“The last four games we’ve been awesome together. George is just a wonderful bloke to play with.”

Ford, representing Blayney, and Hamilton, from Molong, took an early lead in the final and maintained it to be up 21-8 after 15 ends.

Diduszko and Beath, three-time Eagle winners, grabbed a shot here and there but Hamilton and Ford were on a roll and couldn’t be matched.

Hamilton and Ford scored a solid 26-7 semi-final win over Leni Levini and Ron Pearman yesterday morning.

Diduszko and Beath set up a fantastic final when they downed Inverell’s Darren Hungerford and Doug Newton 23-16 in the other semi.

Hamilton said they knew they would be challenged when they heard who they were playing in the final.

“We knew we had a chance,” Hamilton said.

“We were gonna make it hard for them. Over the last three games we’ve been pretty hot.

“I think we had their measure by halfway but you never know with these two. They’re awesome.”

Beath said it had been a difficult tournament.

“We got through the group of death. In the quarter-final and semi-final we were behind and came back,” Beath said.

Diduszko said their opponents were simply too good in the final.

“They got away to a good start and we couldn’t peg it back,” Diduszko said.

“They deserved to win. They were brilliant.”

Ford said it was a great final to be a part of.

“The crowd really pumps you up. Adrenaline takes over. When that Adrenaline stops my knees are just going to collapse,” Ford laughed.
