Maiden races prove popular

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE maiden events at Sunday’s Racing Orange meeting have attracted bumper nominations.

Nominations closed at 11am yesterday with the Maiden Handicap (1000m) attracting 26 runners and the Maiden Plate (1280m) drawing in 23 possible starters.

The Class 2 Handicap (1280m) was also popular with 22 nominations.

The Class 3 Handicap (1000m) received 17 nominations and the Benchmark 60 Handicap (1400m) drew in 15.

However, the other two races have had to extend their nominations until 11am today.

The Open Handicap (1600m) has 12 nominations and the Two-Year-Old Handicap (1000m) just eight.

Orange trainers feature heavily in the nominations with Don Oakley, Sylvia Szabo, Peter Stanley, Alison Smith, Brian Buckley, Lee Van Den Bos, Brad Draper and Peter Cornish all hoping to get starts in Sunday’s meeting.

Weights are to be in by 4pm today and the acceptances by 9am tomorrow.

Sunday’s meet will be a Family Fun Day, with the seven-race program the feature.
