LACE The Ghillys broke her maiden yesterday but only had a small following at Towac Park for the big moment.
Cowra’s Michael Lynch trains Lace The Ghillys ($7.10) and both he and the filly’s owners missed out on the maiden victory in the Coates Hire Maiden Plate (1300m) in what was her fifth start.
Only stable foreperson, Lynch’s wife, Carol Lynch, kicked the three-year-old home from the crowd as the bay filly reeled in pace-setter Intertheblue ($4.80) in the final 50m.
“The owners didn’t come this time. I actually rode it home,” Carol Lynch said.
“They’ll be very happy. I think they’ll be a bit sad they didn’t turn up actually, but anyway, that happens. They’ve got jobs to do.”
Debbie Beuzeville-trained Intertheblue got to the front early in the field of six as aptly-named Cup Day, Rigidity and Leichhardt were scratched.
The Orange mare set the pace and held the lead until 150m from the line when Lace The Ghillys began to challenge.
The three-year-old filly finished the stronger with Brooke Timmis on board to win the maiden by a length to Intertheblue and a further 1 1/4 lengths to Gold N Waters ($2.20 fav) third.
Lynch believes Lace The Ghillys will now be aimed at a mile race, although a spell may be in order after breaking the maiden.
“I think they were actually looking for a 1600m,” Lynch said.
“I don’t know if they were actually going to get her into one or whether they’ll give her a bit of a spell.
“I think they’re wanting to look for a bit further for her.
“I think she’s bred to do a bit of distance, go a bit further in distance, but you’ve got to get them fit to get them up into that.
“You can’t just go from your 1000m to your 1600m.”
Orange trainers picked up a couple of victories yesterday, with Peter Cornish’s Corley Moor winning the John Cooke Real Estate Benchmark 60 Handicap, while Brad Draper’s Deadwood Trader took out the WIN Television Maiden Plate.
