ORANGE’S Rachel Divall has excelled at a sport she is relatively new at.
Divall represented NSW at the Under 14 Indoor Hockey Invitational Championships last week on the NSW Central Coast.
The talented outdoor player took up the sport last year and quickly adapted her outdoor skills to the indoor version of the game.
She was initially shocked at being selected in the NSW under 14 girls side late last year after playing with Lithgow in the State carnival.
The 13-year-old was the NSW side’s best player at last week’s invitational championship.
NSW went through the competition without a loss and conceded just three goals in eight games.
Divall, who was a back, scored 16 goals in eight games.
She was named the NSW side’s players’ player and also took home the coach’s award.
The Kinross-CYMS player thought she could have performed better.
“There were a couple of games where I don’t think I played very well,” Divall said.
In the round robin matches NSW defeated Brisbane Rage 5-1, ACT 9-0, Victoria Bushrangers 13-0, Victoria 4-1, NSW Blues 8-0, Tasmania 7-1 and Rockhampton 3-0.
NSW went up against the NSW Blues in the final and won 2-0.
Indoor hockey is played on a basketball court-sized field with sideboards which can be played off during the match.
Players cannot lift the ball unless going for a shot and the hockey sticks and balls are lighter.
Divall said the speed of the six-a-side game is quicker than outdoor hockey.
Fellow Orange hockey players Nick Milne and Nick Hill also played in the invitational championships with the NSW second side that finished third in the under 16 boys’ competition.
