DARRYN Marjoram thinks it will be special having his family with him when he represents Australia for the first time at a veterans hockey tournament in Hong Kong.
Marjoram, his wife and two children fly out to Hong Kong today for the over-40s hockey tournament, which will feature 10 teams from around the world.
This will be Marjoram’s first time donning the green and gold and he is excited about doing so overseas in front of his family.
“It’s going to be massive. I’m very excited,” he said.
“The kids are stoked about it, my son (Tanner) has been saving up since July last year since they named the team.”
The Bloomfield men’s Premier League Hockey player was selected in the team after the Australian Veterans Championships in Darwin last year.
He again played for NSW at this year’s national veterans tournament in Melbourne and feels that carnival was a great preparation for the trip to Hong Kong, as it concluded less than two weeks ago.
“Melbourne was a good preparation for it, having it only two weeks before going to Hong Kong, and most players played in Melbourne,” Marjoram said.
“One goalie broke his thumb but he’ll be right by Hong Kong.
“There was a fullback from NSW who chose not to play because he didn’t want to risk injury.
“For myself it was good because I busted my hand and it was good to give it a good test ready for when we go away.
“It was a bit scratchy at the start of the tournament in Melbourne, but in the last two games it was no problem.”
The Australian squad got together in Melbourne during the national tournament and this is the second time they have assembled since being selected in the team.
They had a training session in February and will have two more sessions in Hong Kong before the tournament.
Marjoram knows nothing about his opponents but expects Australia to perform strongly given the talent in the team.
“I know with the players in the Australian team, I’m very lucky to be in there. It’s a very high standard ... and some of them have played for the Kookaburras, the open team,” he said.
