KEEGAN Brooke is looking to emulate the feats of Des Abbott and Joel Carroll by being another Indigenous player to represent the Kookaburras.

Brooke will head to Melbourne next month as part of the Australian Sports Commission’s National Talent Identification and Development Squad for the men’s Champions Trophy tournament.

The 17-year-old will train and play against state-based institutes of sport with the NTID squad and will watch the Australian team play at the Champions Trophy, with a training session with the Kookaburras also scheduled.

Brooke will learn from some of Australia’s best coaches at the camp and it is an exciting opportunity.

This is the second year the Bloomfield Premier League Hockey forward has been selected in the NTID squad, which has been assembled to develop promising youngsters with the aim of them playing for Australia at the the 2012 Olympics in London.

Last year’s camp was held in Darwin and Brooke is looking forward to mixing with Australia’s best players, especially Abbott and Carroll, who also progressed through the NTID program.

“Des Abbott, he’s in the Kookaburras side and he was in this squad I’m in now and it’s the same with his cousin, Joel Carroll,” Brooke said.

“He’s debuted for the Kookaburras now as well, along with Jonathan Peris. They’ve all come through this.

“I think there is a training session with them at this camp.

“But we just watch their games and we have a bit of paperwork to do, so we learn how to read the game a bit and learn the structures they play.

“Last time, we stayed at the same place they did and got to mingle with the blokes, so that was pretty good.”

The forward is keen to develop his game under the tutelage of top coaches like former Kookaburra Jay Stacy and says it is easy to improve under their guidance.

“They’ve been there and done it at the top level,” he said.

“It’s just the way they read the game, it’s a lot easier to relate to. They’re easy to learn off.”

Australia will play against England, Germany, Spain, Korea and the Netherlands in Melbourne at the Champions Trophy, which runs from November 28-December 6.
