EVERYBODY loves a grey.
And with a name like Steve’s Gold, it’ll be pretty hard to go past the Sylvia Szabo-trained four-year-old grey gelding at the 2012 Picnic Races today at Towac Park.
Foreman at the Sylvia Szabo stables, Michael Plummer said a lot would have to work in Steve’s Gold’s favour in the eight-horse field for race six, the $2,500 Class B Handicap (1280m) if he was to come away with a winner.
“(The distance) is probably a bit short for him and the track needs to be really, really dry,” Plummer said.
“But he is coming back from an injury so the run will be good for him.”
Orange has received nearly 13 millimetres of rain this week.
Late yesterday the track was rated a slow six.
But with more rain expected today, Plummer said the Towac Park track would more than likely be rated dead.
And the rain wouldn’t help Steve’s Gold.
“He should be okay, though, as long as the track is dry,” Plummer said. “The track’s perfectly safe. With dry conditions like we’ve had (yesterday), it’ll dry out really quick. Even if we see another couple inches of rain, the track will be fine to race on.”
Szabo’s other chance today is Damotime in race three.
While Orange trainer Peter Cornish also has Jaybee Dancer in race three and Lee Van Den Bos’ Regal Tzar is in the second.
Don Oakley is the only Orange chance with Fly First in the main race, the $4,000 Orange Picnic Cup (1300m)
Orange Picnic Racing Club committee member Bruce Johnson said despite the predicted rain, he expected racing to go ahead today.
“There’s a bit of cloud cover but we haven’t had rain for a couple of days,” Johnston said. “We’re out here doing track work at the moment.”
However, should the weather get the better of the meeting, there will still be plenty of activities at Towac Park.
All bar and TAB facilities will remain open if racing is washed out.
Race one, the $2,500 Maiden Plate (1280m), will jump at 2pm today.
