WENTWORTH GOLF
WENTWORTH golf last Saturday centred on a two man ambrose played in goodish-for-late-June conditions, this one was sponsored by Orange Plasterboard/Alan Hurford. A couple of Wenty’s leading tradies in the form of Barry Rhodes and Bob Whitty carded the scratch best of 64 and did it easily.
The handicap on 61 3/4 was taken out by the early morning pairing of Richard Venner and Matt Williamson. Newly crowned B champion Rod Cole paired with Fritz Vander Wal to get runner-up on 62 net, just a shot clear of Ian Carr and Dave “Sparky” Parkes 62 1/2. The ball cut in this one was 64 1/2 on a countback made by the cow milker Bill Venner and Graham Carr, excited at the thought of a Skaifey comeback.
The long drives in this one went to Tim Thornhill, Grant Connor and “Deano”.
For members looking ahead, Saturday, July 11 is an 18 hole stableford. And importantly for members, the AGM is set for July 27. The board is up for nominations and all positions will be vacated. If you have ever said “Why don’t they (the directors) do this?, or why have they done that?”, well here is your chance, give it a lot of thought.
Sunday again produced fairly ordinary weather for the match play elimination rounds of the WO Yates Trophy sponsored by Stuart Garvey’s Mid State Financial Services. At rounds end it was down to the last four and the promise of two great matches looms large. In round one at 9am it is Chris Riley v Steve Bray off 5/4 and 3/2 results. It is a coin toss, but my tip is Riles. Game two features Alan Hurford (3/2) and Bruce Cousins (3/2).
The open afternoon 18 hole stableford 4BBB saw a good win to Helen and Dan Ross on 38 points, just one clear of Shirley and Dave Grenfell on 37 points, with two nearest the pins going to Dave.
This Sunday, action in the open afternoon is a stableford sponsored by Phil Selman.
Tomorrow at Wentworth members get to go around in the July monthly medal - this one boasts Regency Jewellers as the sponsor. The previous two have gone to Geoff Wright and in current form you would be brave to say he could not do it again. To highlight my confidence, note that Geoff after four rounds of the Bel-Air Carpets sponsored eclectic is poised in position one scratch and two in the handicap.
The eclectic, run over the course of six monthly medals, is now down to the penultimate round. On 69/51 Jason Hurford is sitting 1/1 in B, on 77/59 and lying 13/6, I have work to do. Perhaps the Westoil NTP voucher is in reach. The C is in photo finish mode and as we go to press Matt Wright on 75/56 is in the front, just a tip ahead of Dave Stonestreet (76/56).
The presentation for this one is on at 6pm and is the only place to be post golf. By now you have read the annual report and have noted that your ongoing tangible support is vital.
Woe betide the weekend is not conducive, give some thought to a hit mid-week. John Farrimond did this week and duly won the Tuesday nine-hole round, Ian Fischer then took out the 14 and 18-hole components of this open Tuesday round.
The other popular open mid-week is on Thursday where you can play an open 18 hole stableford. In last week’s round Josh Warner on 35 did best ahead of Darrell Duff 33. Darrell paired with John Sinclair to take the 4B on 40 points, NTPs to Stan Walsh, Brian McEvoy and Rob Hayes.
Lady golfers don’t forget Saturday morning for an open stableford at Wenty. For full details and a start time you can contact the pro shop staff.
The lady golfers on Wednesday played a stableford for the WD Spoon in three grades. In Division Three Heather Mewitt on 34 was the best ahead of of Di Martin on 29 (countback).
The best in Division Two was Val Gregory on 34 points from Jan Moad 32.
It was close in Division One. Lee Pickett got the nod from Lou Stevens (32) by a shot. Nearest the pins to Lou Stevens and Val Gregory. While the drive and pitch was won by Marg Hobby and Jenny Baird.
Next week’s round will be a stroke round.
This Sunday there will be a junior clinic at Wentworth. Children are asked to arrive at 8.45am for a 9am start.
