Top trio tipped to take medal

06 Nov, 2009 08:00 AM
DUNTRYLEAGUE

THIS week sees the November edition of the monthly medal contested on a golf course that is approaching peak condition and no doubt a matching majestic score will be required to take home the medal.

The event is generously sponsored by Harts Machinery, with the overall nearest the pin sponsor being Westoil Petroleum. We thank these sponsors for their continued support.

A group that may produce a winner this week contains three supreme athletes in Brett Mackin, Mal Gregor and Duncan Gibbs. Brett or ‘Chicken Run Charlie’ as he is known for his love of playing just nine or less holes, has been in a little bit of form of late and may carry this forward this weekend.

Mal, who along with the writer of this column (and quite a few others) falls into the cosmetically challenged category, has been on a dream run of late and it would not be a big surprise to see him continue his fine form tomorrow. But the ‘Eye Candy for the Blind’ T-shirts his playing partners have had made for him may be a slight distraction.

With Duncan Gibbs we can use such phrases as ‘world’s straightest driver’, ‘phenomenal putter’ and ‘extraordinary short game’. But unfortunately we would be lying. Nevertheless he is certainly entertaining, and you can’t ask for more than that!

Last Saturday saw an individual stableford contested, with the day’s best score recorded by Jim Colgan, who carded 42 points. When you saw who his playing partners were this is quite an unbelievable score! With Mal Gregor, Jock Ferguson and Kenneth Mattock all scoring 40 points and above it certainly was a day of low numbers. The overall NTP was won by William F Callaghan, who would have to go down as one of the world’s finest measurers and from all reports, he hit quite a quality shot.

A few reminders, this Sunday the RSPCA Charity Golf day takes place with a 12.30pm shotgun start. A number of places are still available. Also, the entries for the 2009 Duntryleague Open Amateur Championship close at 5pm on Monday, with the draw being completed shortly after.

This week’s golf tip is to repair pitch marks and keep your pace of play moving - and when walking on the green please lift your feet, as the golfers behind you don’t want to putt through your dragged hoof marks.
