June medal up for grabs

12 Jun, 2009 09:35 AM
DUNTRYLEAGUE GOLF

THIS weekend’s golfing highlight at Duntryleague is the June monthly medal, which is expected to see a capacity afternoon field and a somewhat smaller morning field greet the starter.

The medal round is sponsored by Peter Smith Wholesale Cars and the Overall NTP is being sponsored by the Oriana Motor Inn. We thank both these sponsors for their continued support.

With the balmy weather and the large quantity of frozen rain that fell on the course during the past weeks, this Saturday’s round will also see the implementation of the preferred lie rule. This rule would have to be a favourite amongst members, especially those with limited imaginations.

They can now play the one shot around every green - they just have to choose which shot that is and choose a lie that is appropriate.

As we all know the perfect lie for a chunk is quite different to that which is required for a skull and the ever-elusive shank requires a different lie altogether.

Also a quick reminder to a wet golf course’s greatest enemy, the cart driver. Please be mindful of where you drive, as damage this time of year will take a long time to repair and grow back to normal.

Last week saw the City of Orange Championships contested over the three golf courses in Orange, with around 160 players braving the ghastly conditions, with many of our members featuring in the prizes.

A special mention goes to Lloyd ‘Numbers’ Dunlop, who took out the main prize by six shots from Dean Turner, with Charles Dunlop a further three shots back in third. To all those that competed - a big congratulations and to the organisers - a job well done.

After a quick look at this Saturday’s time sheet I will now try and eliminate some contenders in the next few paragraphs.

Of the morning players few people stand out more than Mark ‘Hildy’ Hildebrandt. Mark is a world-renowned elite athlete and if he can hole some putts longer than his surname a podium finish is not out of the question.

Though overcoming playing with his playing partners may yet be his biggest obstacle.

There is a strong rumour that Peter Campbell is about to stage a mid-season turnaround similar to that of his beloved Sharks and if all goes to plan not even Ricky Stuart’s lack of imagination could stand in his way.

The mild-mannered, easygoing David Vere has been doing some sly practice of late, and with his mercurial distance the current wet conditions may well be right up his alley.

And the last of our likely contenders is none other than Errol Babbage, with the shortest day of the year just around the corner it may be time for one of the shortest golfers to grace the podium and no doubt there will be some boxes ready for him to reach the microphone.

Sunday sees the Legacy Charity Golf Day being played. It’s a 12pm shotgun start, with both a 4BBB stableford and an individual stableford being contested. There are still a few spots available and those interested should call the pro shop and grab a spot.

And before I go we have yet more words of wisdom from the elusive Tarana Tiger, who says: “When you are getting a lesson the only reason the pro asks you to keep your head down is so you can’t see him laughing at you!”
