WENTWORTH made the ideal start to their Central Western District Golf Association pennants campaign on Sunday.
Playing at home, the Orange team downed Dubbo 3-2 in their division one clash.
Wentworth captain and number one player Michael Davis led by example, downing Jake O’Brien 2 and 1.
Number two player Travis Roweth was nervous before Sunday’s match after going through the 2011 pennant season without a win in the top division.
He changed that on Sunday, recording a solid 4 and 3 win over Grahame Allan.
Steve Bray, at number four, also celebrated a win for Wentworth, downing Richard Pawlenko on the last.
Tim White was beaten by Andrew Graham 5 and 3 and Craig Coles went down to Phil Munro on the last.
The result gives Wentworth 1.3 points after the first round and a share of second place with Forbes, after they accounted for Wellington 3-2.
Bathurst had the best opening round in the top grade, beating Mudgee 4-1.
Bathurst number one Phil Campbell easily accounted for Matt Consadine 6 and 5.
Luke Ellis downed John Osborn 2up, Scott Matheson beat Matt Hicks 3 and 1 and Bill Casey recorded a 2up win over David Pearce.
Number two Josh Campbell was the only Mudgee player to get a win, beating Greg Kelly 3 and 2.
Orange teams performed well in the opening round of the lower divisions on Sunday.
Playing at Orange Ex-Services Country Club, Wentworth and Ex-Services celebrated wins and Blayney recorded a healthy 4-1 victory over Dubbo.
Wentworth and Ex-Services claimed wins in division three at Manildra.
Things didn’t go as well in division four where Ex-Services was beaten by Dubbo 4-1 and Wentworth succumbed to Bathurst 5-0.
In this Sunday’s second round of matches, division one play in Dubbo, Bathurst host division two, division three will travel come to Wentworth and division four will travel to Mudgee.
