HOME-course knowledge proved vital for Duntryleague (1) as they edged out Orange rivals Wentworth yesterday in the first round of Central Western Districts Golf Association pennants.

The defending division one champions defeated Wentworth 3-2 yesterday at Duntryleague in one of three closely fought ties in the top grade.

Duntryleague (1) captain Robert Payne says playing on their home course was important for the defending champions as Wentworth had to adjust to their quicker greens.

“We were lucky to win today I can tell you,” Payne said.

“We were fortunate enough to be playing at home and you should win at home. We only won 3-2, at home you should be winning by more than that.”

But he is happy with the result as Payne is prepared to take 3-2 wins in the remaining four rounds to retain the title.

Payne defeated Wentworth captain Craig Coles 6 and 4, although the Duntry No.1 says the match was closer than the scoreline suggests.

“Craig didn’t have the best of luck today and our greens are a bit quicker than theirs,” Payne said.

And in a surprise result, Duntry No.5 Michael Campbell beat Craig Stojanovic 2 up in a rare match in the bottom position for the Wentworth right-hander.

Geoff Wright and Jamie Newman recorded the two wins for Wentworth, while Peter Ferguson also picked up a victory for Duntryleague.

All three division one fixtures were decided 3-2, with Wellington and Dubbo also first-round winners.

Wellington beat Duntryleague (2) in a good win against the host club and Dubbo defeated Bathurst as the fifth match was decided on the 19th hole.

Wellington host round two this Sunday and Duntryleague’s tie with Dubbo will be important for the defending champions as they will be forced to make changes to their line-up in the following rounds due to player unavailability.

“The first two matches are pivotal for us,” Payne said.
