Windsor back for defence of crown

DEAN Windsor has one main goal before he moves overseas to join his new Rapha Condor team - win back the Forest Reefs Christmas Cup trophy.

Windsor took out the 2008 event and will return today to try and make it back-to-back titles.

The main motivator behind the Bathurst cyclist’s desire to win is not so much the title, but keeping his mother happy.

“I had the honour of taking home the trophy last year. Mum has a special spot where the trophy sits,” Windsor explained.

“We had to give it back last week and she thinks the house looks empty without it. It’s probably the coolest trophy I’ve ever won.”

So keen is Windsor to get the trophy back, he plans to team up with younger brother Blair, 20.

“I’ve talked to my brother and he knows how much Mum wants the trophy back as well,” Windsor laughed.

“We’ve planned to ride up together.”

Dean admitted should it come to a sprint finish against his brother, it would be game on.

“Hopefully we can make an agreement on the course so it doesn’t come down to a sprint,” he joked.

The 54km event is handicapped, meaning the Windsor brothers will go off scratch and will have to chase down the other riders who get a head start.

The 23-year-old said there is nothing easy about the event.

“It’s a really tough course. It’s normally really windy,” he explained.

“There’s a few really steep hills. It benefits the handicap riders. Last year was really hard. I made my move on the last hill and it turned out to be a winning move.”

Windsor said it was difficult to say who might threaten for the title today because the handicap system makes it unpredictable.

He expects Orange’s Mick Cain, along with some of the club’s younger stars, to push for the title with Bathurst riders Connor Trott and Craig Hutton.

Regardless, Windsor will be feeling ready to ride as he enjoys his last few weeks in the area before moving to the United Kingdom where the Rapha Condor team is based.

The former Drapac Porsche rider is looking forward to the new challenge.

“It’s a good step forward because they spend 10 months in Europe racing the pro circuit,” he said.

“This will probably be my last race in the Central West for a long time because I leave in January.”

Today’s Forest Reefs Christmas Cup will start and finish at the Forest Reefs Tavern.

Sign on is at 3.30pm for a 4pm race start.
