DON’T be surprised if you see Orange Emus co-coaches Trent Auld and Matt Greatbatch at the chemist during the week.
The pair have been left with several selection headaches after 40 players took to the field in Saturday’s trial match against the Mosman Whales at Endeavour Oval.
The trial was split into 30-minute quarters, with the first half of the match contested between a mixture of second and third grade players from both sides, with the final hour of the match played by both clubs’ top squads.
Emus coaches Greatbatch and Auld couldn’t be happier with the way everyone in the squad performed, believing the side’s excellent performance across both grades is a good sign for the club.
“We went great. Around 40 players turned up and they all trialled really well,” Greatbatch said.
“With both sides beating Mosman, all it has done is given us more headaches.
“Every bloke out on the field has put his hand up for selection in the top squad. It is not a bad headache to have, though.”
Manly recruit Harley McAllister continued his sparkling form from the Cowra 10s while TJ Cunynghame guided the side around the park beautifully.
However, the side’s victory came at a cost, with a number of injuries coming out of the match.
“Harley, the second-rower from Manly, played really well. Tom Goolagong was another one who went really well and TJ Cunynghame was great at five-eighth for us,” Greatbatch said.
“There are a couple of injuries from the game but it is good to get them out of the way early in the season.”
Emus will now travel to Dubbo this weekend for their toughest test of the pre-season so far and Greatbatch is hopeful his charges can emulate their Mosman trial form against a Central West Rugby Union powerhouses Roos.
“It is wide open at the moment. Most spots are still up for grabs,” he said.
