ROWING
KINROSS Wolaroi School rowers have been successful at state regattas in the past three weeks and they are now hopeful they can continue to perform well next week at the Australian Championships in Penrith.
The school club competed at nationals for the first time last year and while happy making some finals, they now have their sights on winning medals against the best rowers from around the country.
A contingent of 27 rowers will compete for Kinross in various events with crews to contest the schoolboys VIII, under 17s quad scull, schoolgirls single scull and quad scull and year 10 quad scull.
Borjan Kosarac and Declan Michell will also race in the single scull with places in finals the goal of most crews.
“A placing in the A-final would be a good achievement for the school,” Schoolboys VIII stroke Tom Borowski said.
Kosarac added: “Considering we're going against the very best in the country getting to a final let alone the A-final should be a satisfactory achievement if not to win or get a medal.”
Master in charge of rowing, Bob Holmes, thinks Kinross can produce better results than last year.
“If you get into the top six in the country I think you have done pretty well,” Holmes said.
“We made a few finals last year and were very happy with it and this year we would like to make more and a medal out of one of them would be even better.”
The Kinross crews have been working hard to boost their chances of succeeding at nationals, training most days of the week.
While they struggle to find time to practice on the water, the club has plenty of rowing machines and schoolgirls quad stroke Grace Michell believes that is helping them beat some Sydney crews from clubs with more history in rowing.
The Kinross rowing program started only five years ago and continues to grow.
