Derby win has never been so crucial

THE Group 10 premier league clash between CYMS and Hawks tomorrow promises to be just as nail-biting as their season opener.

When the two sides met in round one, CYMS escaped with a 28-26 victory in a see-sawing match.

This is the only game CYMS have won this season, while Hawks are yet to record a victory.

The cross-town rivals have named competitive sides for tomorrow’s local derby, with Hawks including centre Glen Bunworth, who has been an injury concern over the last few weeks.

“That’s the best side we can put on the paddock, so I’m happy with that,” Hawks coach Jaime Kelso said.

“Knowing Buns (Glen Bunworth) is playing, that’s a big plus for us.”

Hawks and CYMS have been guilty of not playing their best football for the full 80 minutes, but both sides say this is something they’re addressing.

There is no lull expected in tomorrow’s derby.

Instead, wet weather football could be the order of the day.

If this is the case, expect the forwards to see plenty of ball.

“If it’s wet, the game will be won in the forwards,” Kelso said.

“I’m sure CYMS will try to win it in the forwards. They’ve got a heaps bigger pack than us. We’ll try and mix things up a bit and beat them with a bit of fitness at the end.”

CYMS captain Des Knight said his backs are not to be underestimated.

“I think it’s going to be another wet weekend, which means wet weather footy and a lot of work in the forwards,” Knight explained.

“We’ve matched it with most sides in the forwards this year. The main thing is to be strong up the middle and then dazzle them out wide.”

Knight said there was another aspect of the game which would play a large hand in deciding the winner.

“Completions,” he said.

“You have to hang onto the ball, complete your sets and keep going at them.”

Knight and Kelso agreed a tight score was expected again, as well as a physical encounter.

Tomorrow’s premier league match will be played at Wade Park and will kick-off at 1.45pm.
