Winning grand finals in Cavalier fashion

02 Apr, 2009 08:09 AM
CAVALIERS won an impressive seventh-straight grand final last weekend, and making the feat even more remarkable is the ease in which they win deciders.

Richie Venner’s men beat Centrals by 95 runs on the weekend to claim back-to-back Orange District Cricket Association first grade titles.

These victories come after Cavaliers won the last five Bathurst Orange Inter-District Cricket crowns, making it seven consecutive summers the Orange side has won the silverware.

The grand final should be one of the closest games of the season as the top two teams meet in the most important game of the year.

But Cavaliers’ winning margins suggest they lift for the decider better than their opponents.

This season’s 95-run winning margin is slightly higher than last season’s margin over CYMS, but it is on the lower scale of their list of impressive victories.

They have beaten Orange City by 122 runs (03/04) and Bathurst City Redbacks by 131 runs (05/06), although their crowning glory came in 06/07 when Cavaliers demolished CYMS by 335 runs in the final BOIDC decider.

Their narrowest grand final win was back in the 04/05 decider, when CYMS made it well into the Cavaliers tail.

Cavaliers passed CYMS’ total with just two wickets in hand.

History also shows Cavaliers much prefer to set their opponents a total, as only two of their seven premierships have come when chasing.

Their first BOIDC title in the sequence was a four-wicket win over ORC back in 02/03.

Seven consecutive grand final victories is an imposing record and that run has given Cavaliers all of the big game experience a player can ask for.

And with this wealth of experience to draw upon, Cavaliers will be a tough side to beat in any future grand finals should they make it through to the final game of the season.
