Tamworth to pull a fast one if teen plays

TEEN fast bowling sensation Josh Hazlewood could feature for Tamworth at the SCG Country Cup final 16 carnival in Orange and Bathurst in December as the teams for the carnival have been decided.

Hazlewood made his debut for the NSW Blues last week in a tour match against New Zealand and was impressive with the ball taking 2-53 in the first innings against the Black Caps and 2-11 in the second.

It was a tremendous first outing against international competition and further state honours await the 17-year old.

Hazlewood’s availability for the December 27-29 final 16 carnival in Orange and Bathurst is up in the air at the moment but his inclusion in the Tamworth side would certainly help their chances of making a third straight final.

The top two teams from the carnival progress to the state final at the SCG.

Cowra will be Western Zone’s representative at the carnival following their narrow five-run win over Parkes last Sunday.

Parkes fell five runs short of Cowra’s 8-179 and now Cowra will take on some of NSW Country cricket’s powerhouses.

Wollongong have qualified for the carnival, along with fellow Illawarra side Balgownie and Oak Flats and Albion Park from the South Coast.

Macleay Valley, Clarence and The Entrance will all contest the final 16 carnival, as will Albury Wodonga and ACT side Tuggeranong Valley.

Hunter teams Maitland, Hamilton-Wickham, Stockton and Waratah Mayfield have also qualified, while Toronto Workers produced the biggest win of the third round to progress.

Toronto killed the chances of Merewether claiming a third-straight Country Cup title, beating the two-time defending champions by five wickets.

Orange and Bathurst will co-host the carnival on December 27-29 although six of the eight fourth round matches will be played in Orange.

Only two pitches will be available in Bathurst so Orange has had to pick up the slack.

Wade Park, Riawena Oval and two fields at Jack Brabham Park will host games with two of Orange’s three remaining turf pitches at Glenroi Oval, Kinross Wolaroi School and Bloomfield also required.
