ROYAL HOTEL CUP
ORANGE City have handed Kinross their first loss of their Orange District Cricket Association first grade season.
City took the honours in a low-scoring Royal Hotel Cup match at Wade Park on Friday evening.
On a bowler-friendly wicket, Kinross batted first and were removed for 113 in the 40th over.
Orange City managed to win by three wickets when they reached 7-119 in the 36th over.
Orange City captain Dave Boundy was a proud man after the win.
“I thought that was a pretty tough effort from the boys,” Boundy said.
“I was happier with that win than some of our others. It was a tough wicket to bat on.
“Our boys put a few partnerships together which is important. Two of the young blokes, Luke Wilson and Sam Hazzard, held it together for a while. At the end, Rut (Andrew Rutledge) and I had to get about 20 runs.”
Kinross were in trouble early on at 1-19 when opener Chris Tremain fell for nine.
Fellow opener Jayden Gardner (19) was caught off a Josh Bennett ball to have Kinross at 2-35.
James Conn was the best with the bat for Kinross, working his way to 29, which included two fours on the Wade Park wicket.
Jacob Suttor (17) tried to boost the students’ total but fell victim to Nathan Payne as Kinross went on to finish on 113.
Payne ripped through the Kinross middle order to take 4-19 off his eight overs.
“That was the best I’ve seen Nathan bowl,” Boundy said.
“I’m very happy for him because he’s been toiling away and not seeing the results. The last game he bowled very well and this game he was superb. He was on a hat-trick and had half a chance but it didn’t come off.”
Bennett also had a good day for Orange City, with the youngster claiming 2-21 off his seven overs.
Orange City openers Tony Wright (17) and Will Medcalf (18) both made starts.
Wilson (22) and Hazzard (21) combined for a 37-run partnership, helping Orange City to 4-81.
Boundy (21 not out) scored the winning runs for City.
Tremain took 3-10 from his eight overs and Jackson Coote claimed 2-29.
The win pushed Orange City to the top of the Royal Hotel Cup standings, while Kinross hold onto a share of second spot with Centrals.
Cavaliers and Waratahs are still to play their round five RHC game this Friday.
In the overall points Kinross jump to the lead on 30, just two ahead of Cavaliers and Orange City.
