THE skate park at Moulder Park may seem like just a place for skateboarders to do a few tricks and socialise - but it is also producing some top freestyle BMX riders.
Orange has a small BMX community and they are achieving some great results, with top rider Dan Baker on his way to Tokyo Disneyland to showcase his talents on the world stage.
Baker is reportedly pulling in $15,000 for 10 weeks’ riding in Japan, which is living the dream according to his fellow Orange riders.
Sam Parish has been riding at smaller events and performing well, and will compete at the BMX Games in Sydney in January, and says Baker’s achievement in securing a ride overseas is impressive.
“It’s massive. That’s pretty much every rider’s dream, to go and get paid to do what they want to do ... so it’s pretty good,” Parish said.
Will Gunn is another Orange rider coming up with some quality results, as the 20-year-old finished in the top three at the Spinal Disorder event at the Royal Melbourne Show on September 27, which also featured professional riders.
Parish has his big event coming up in January when he rides at the BMX Games over the Australia Day weekend and it comes after initially taking on the Moulder Park skate park on a scooter.
The 16-year-old moved up to a bike and is an up-and-comer of the sport, as the backflip he is doing in the photo on the back page suggests.
“I used to ride scooters down here and then I saw all of the other blokes riding bikes. I just got mum to get me one a few years ago and then I’ve just been hanging out with them and riding with them,” Parish said.
