KINROSS Wolaroi School’s Jemima McCalman is still coming to terms with her recent sporting achievement.
The Prep School student won a bronze medal at last week’s NSW Primary Schools Sports Association Track and Field Championships.
Her third placing in the junior girls’ 800m was enough to qualify her for the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships later this month.
McCalman is still coming to terms with the idea of competing on the national stage.
“I’m really excited,” McCalman smiled.
“It didn’t really sink in until the other day that I’m going to nationals.”
McCalman won her heat at the NSW event when she stopped the clock in a personal best time of two minutes 39.08 seconds.
This time meant she was the seventh fastest qualifier for the final.
The 10-year-old raced a great final and was part of the leading three competitors as they made the final turn.
With 200m to go the other two girls pulled away and McCalman finished well to claim third.
She smashed the personal best she ran earlier in the day by three seconds.
The Year 4 students is no stranger to competing at a state level after representing her school in cross country.
She has also represented Orange at the NSW Little Athletics Championships in 800m and 1500m.
McCalman will have plenty of variety as she prepares for the national championships.
She already has netball and touch football training, which she believes will help her.
“They are good because they give you a lot of fitness and strength.,” she explained.
She will also have Little Athletics training and she will do her own work.
McCalman said she will aim to run another personal best at the national event but hasn’t set any other goals.
“I haven’t really thought about what I’d like to do because I’m a bit amazed I got to nationals,” she said.
The 12 Years and Under SSA Track and Field Championships will be held in Sydney from November 30 to December 3.
