‘He will be an Aussie champion some day’

IT might not happen overnight, but it will happen.

That’s the view of Orange PCYC head trainer Bobby Williams as his charge David Farr prepares to compete at the Australian Boxing Titles for the second successive year from today.

Williams is adamant the 23-year-old will one day be a national champion - and Farr is hopeful the experience gained from last year’s first-round loss to the eventual champion will hold him in good stead when the draw for the event is made at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra this morning.

“I’m looking forward to it. There will be some tough boys there, we’re talking the best fighters and state champions from across Australia,” he said.

“Last year was a great experience. I lost to the eventual winner first-up by five points, but I held my own against him.

“Realistically, I know I’m a big underdog. I’ve had 18 fights and most of these guys have had 50 to 100, they’re a lot more experienced than me.

“It will be a great experience to go again this year, to win would be absolutely awesome.”

The middleweight has a solid record of 9-9 from his 18 fights, but is confident he has done everything possible to prepare for nationals since downing Peter Georgiou to claim the NSW middleweight title in October.

“I’ve been working hard, training every day. I’ve had some good sparring sessions against Sam Ah-See, he has helped a lot,” Farr said.

“Ben Quarmby has also been helping me, so has Darren Morris.”

It’s this dedication Williams believes will be rewarded in the near future.

“He deserves everything he gets. Of all the boys I’ve trained I don’t think I’ve seen any work as hard as him,” Williams said.

“In the week before a fight he weighs his food so he makes sure he makes the correct weight at weigh-in.

“If not this time, he will be an Australian champion one day.”

Mobsport boxers Ah-See (welterweight) and Dave Pisani (flyweight) will also compete at the Australian Boxing Titles.

Ah-See won his way to Canberra after defeating the highly-rated Mohammed Zaiden at the NSW Boxing Titles, while Pisani earned his spot after downing Babic Nibkin.

The Australian Boxing Titles begin today at the AIS and conclude on Sunday.
