Vandals take the play out of playground

19 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
PARENTS want harsher penalties for vandals attacking children’s play equipment after yet another Orange park was targeted at the end of last week.

Vandals set fire to a newly-installed set of swings in Elephant Park forcing Orange City Council workers to cordon off the area.

The council is waging an ongoing battle with vandals who have previously attacked the Woodward Street park and destroyed other equipment including a large costly shadecloth which they slashed with knives.

Parents who regularly take their children to local parks say they’ve had enough of the vandals’ destructive behaviour.

Mother of three Peta Govier said she tried to take her children to outdoor play equipment at least once a week and couldn’t understand what would drive anyone to destroy something children enjoy.

“It’s just wrong,” she said.

“I’ve seen graffiti vandalism before but I’ve never heard of anyone setting fire to anything.

“They must have nothing better to do.”

Mrs Govier said it wasn’t fair that her children weren’t able to play on the swings because of the thoughtless actions of others.

“Anyone that burns anything should go to jail, it’s malicious,” she said.

Mother of two Georgie Worsley said it was a “shame” that the council had recently fixed up Elephant Park only to have it vandalised again.

“Maybe there needs to be more patrolling of the area,” she said.

“Although I’m sure the police have got better things to do.

“I’m not sure when this sort of thing happens, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, probably late at night.”

Yes please! Introduce the harshest penalties possible. This is just ridiculous. No doubt it's our tax payer money and council fees that continually fix up these attacks. I love Elephant Park and so does my little girl- I wish people would get a life, and a job, and some respect for the general community.

What a bunch of losers these morons must be.

I know my grandchildren love to go to this park to play as do many children around the area and further afield.

Just goes to show that these complete idiots have no thought for others, just their own demented and warped idea of fun.

Hope you get caught and then maybe have to pay for the repairs or at least be named and shamed?

Its a shame these vandels cannot be held accountable. They should be made pay for their trouble. Garnish their wages or centrelink payments. Make them pay. And if that doesn't work make them pay and send them to Gaol. They are the scum of society and need to be dealt with harshly.

Um, Common Sense, you need to catch the vandals before you can garnish their wages / Centrelink Payments.

Does the park have lights shinning on it at night? Might be a good investment to have it lit up at night or maybe unfortunately think about putting a high fence around it to lock it up at night. I know we shouldn't have to do this but something has to be done!

Why cant the council pay for increase in mobile security patrols/

or

Have a fence around it... 6ft...7 ft. padlocked n opened each morning by council..

or

install on a 20ft pole a 360degress CCTV security cam. Catch the culprits red handed... punish through court and fine... cost of damage... deductions via direct debit from pay and community service to repair damages.

Their should be a consequence!!

I don't think fencing the area is the right way to go - it would make it look like a detention centre.

Bring back 6 foot cops allowed to give anti-social tossers a kick up the butt and send them on their way.

Too many do-gooders worried about civil liberties etc.....and this is how kids turn out.

Give me the old days where most kids were afraid to do the wrong thing because they knew if they were caught there were consequences to their actions.

@ Too many do-gooders you are absolutely spot on, I wish they would stop turning this great country into a nanny state.

In my day we took the girls down the park. These flaccid punks of today just sit around burning and destroying things. What's happened to the manhoods of the younger generation? How lame they are.
