Transformation takes shape

WELCOME inside the million-dollar extreme makeover that’s just weeks away from transforming an eyesore into an icon.

The Central Western Daily can provide the first glimpses inside the former Supre building in Lords Place since the imposing building closed its doors about a decade ago.

Once abandoned, it didn’t take long for the building to become a blight on the streetscape and a constant thorn in the side of Orange City Council.

However, just weeks remain before the scaffolding comes down and the results of a $900,000 renovation are revealed to a curious public.

“Everyone has looked at this building for a long time and wanted this to happen so it’s great to see it being returned to its former glory,” first floor leasing agent, Benchmark Commercial’s David Hall said.

“When it’s finished, with this abundance of natural light, upstairs will be some of the best office space in Orange.”

Between 20 to 30 builders have been on-site each day to achieve a completion deadline of early December.

Midas Group construction manager Chris Midas said the renovation had thrown up some challenges.

“It’s a good design and has a lot of natural light and a lot of room for movement with what you can do with the building as a whole,” he said.

“(But) it’s been a challenge bringing it up to today’s standards as far as ventilation and environmental requirements are concerned, those standards are very different today to when the building was built.”

One of the biggest changes will be to the exterior, which will feature more than 200 brand new glass panels, supplied by Taberner Glass in Orange.

The existing brick work will also be rendered in stylish, modern colours.

Once the site is ready for occupation, Michael Mullins Chemist will close and reopen as Bestbuy Pharmacy in 750 square metres of space on the ground floor.

All current Michael Mullins staff will keep their positions and will be joined by up to 20 others who are in the process of being recruited.
