LIVE music at the pub doesn't usually conjure up images of knitting, but the rise of Sunday afternoon sessions in local venues has opened up new opportunities for both musicians and audiences.
One patron at the Lucknow Goldfields Tavern worked on a woollen masterpiece while she enjoyed the sounds of guitarist and singer Neil Gill on Sunday.
Mr Gill said a recent increase in the number of venues employing musicians on Sundays was welcome.
“It's fantastic for musicians. It expands our opportunities from Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It's also a bit more laid-back, and that's reflected in the music you play. You can be a bit more eclectic, and it's a good opportunity to throw a few originals in,” he said.
The Royal Hotel, Belgravia at the Union Bank and the Festival Hotel in Molong are some of the other local venues with regular gigs on Sunday.
Lucknow Tavern licensee Colin Yule said the Sunday gigs were working for the venue.
“I'm a fan of live music, but I had to sit back and see what market we could cater for. Obviously we're competing against Orange on Friday and Saturday nights. Sunday is a great day. Listening to live music is better than sitting in front of the TV all day,” he said.
So far, musicians can see only one downside to the arrangement.
“The early starts are a killer,” laughed Mr Gill.
