Rain has little impact on city’s water levels

09 Mar, 2010 09:45 AM
ANOTHER drenching has failed to have any significant impact on the city’s two main storage dams.

While the weekend’s downpour watered thirsty gardens and greened parched lawns, early signs it had any major effect on water supplies are not good.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded a total of 73mm of rain at the Orange Airport between Saturday morning and Monday lunchtime.

Falls of up to 80mm were recorded in suburban Orange.

The rainfall resulted in Suma Park Dam rising from 27.51 per cent capacity on Friday to 27.86 per cent yesterday morning.

Spring Creek Dam rose from 9.31 per cent to 9.77 per cent.

Overall storages increased marginally from 23.91 per cent to 24.28.

The majority of the increases were a result of rain falling on the dams as opposed to run-off.

On a brighter note, 40.8 megalitres of water was captured via the Blackmans Swamp Stormwater Harvesting scheme, which represents about four days supply for the city of Orange.

Primary industries Minister Steve Whan yesterday cautioned the rain was far from drought-breaking.

The majority of NSW, 66.7 per cent, is still officially in drought, Mr Whan said.

Showers are expected to clear today for a mostly sunny day with a top temperature of 19 degrees.

Similar conditions will remain until Sunday when clouds are expected to roll across the region, albeit bringing no anticipated rainfall.

Where did all that water go the creek was over flowwing onto the land around it. And the water came up closer to homes along the back of the creek higher than it has for a long time. Every rain fall we have had in the last few weeks has resulted in the creek over flowing that run along jilba and philip/ spring streets etc. So where is all that water going to thin air because it sure is running down the creek .

Note to Orange City Council; If that much rain has no effect then You're doing it wrong!

I think we better check to see if we've either got big holes in the dams. This seems on the face of it unfathomable.

Hello people! Most of the rain that actually falls in Orange, doesn't flow into the dams. It will take at least 3-4 days of steady rain to start making a significant impact on dam levels.

Should we build a dam north-west of town then?

It is obvious that the catchment area for our water supply is inadequate and is unable to supply sufficient water to an expanding city. The council and government should be exploring the possibility of an additional resevoir to the north west where there is a better catchment area.

Over 16 inches of rain in three months and no run off. What do you think we are all idiots!!

Most of the comment writers don't seem to realise that there is a very large number farm dams in our catchment that have to fill and run over before the water can run into the streams and on to the city reservoirs, and yes there would need to be about a week of steady rain to achieve a good result.

There is a dam to the north-west of Orange already. It supplies Molongs water - it needs to be expanded and the water resources of all dams need to be inter-connected so that Molong and Orange can pool their resources. And Lake Canobolas has also got to be part of the solution as well. But we won't have to worry - Cr Romano's pipeline from the Macquarie River should be almost completed by now, shouldn't it?????
