POLICE have started training to use the new 41-camera CCTV system being trialled in the city.
Yesterday technicians from Celtron, who installed the $185,000 system took police through their paces showing them how they can monitor any one of the cameras from the system separately and zoom in on any problem areas.
Superintendent Mark Szalajko said the monitor at Orange Police Station is linked to the network based at Orange City Council where all data will be deployed.
Supt Szalajko said the camera system will help police react to situations where a number of police will need to be deployed at any one time.
“The cameras will be on 24/7,” he said.
The Federal Government contributed $150,000 to the cost of the cameras with Orange City Council financing the remainder.
Council put the cameras out to tender with Celtron which was the successful tenderer starting work several weeks ago to set up the cameras and monitoring system.
Superintendent Szalajko said he was pleased with the quality of the camera and monitor set up.
“The picture quality is excellent and it is very satisfying to see that police now have this tool to help them protect the community,” he said.
