Protesting the right to a home birth

Protesting the right to a home birth

21 Aug, 2009 07:46 AM
CAR loads of local families will travel to Canberra next month to protest proposed federal legislation that will criminalise the use of an independent midwife during a home birth.

From July next year employing an independent midwife will become illegal and any midwife who defies the law will be issued with a $30,000 fine.

Birth doula and co-convener of the Central West chapter of Joyous Birth, Danielle Martin, will be among several people from Orange who will join protesters from throughout the world and march on Parliament House on September 7 demanding the government rethink the legislation.

“We want to keep home birth as a viable option,” said Ms Martin.

“This new legislation will effectively make home birth illegal and limit women’s options when it comes to their choice of a care provider during birth.

“This is also an issue of women’s rights; you don’t have to agree or disagree with home birth but the fact is that women and families should have every option available to them.”

The proposed legislation has resulted from indemnity insurance being unavailable for midwives.

Ms Martin says the lack of insurance coverage is a “numbers game” and women should not suffer because of it.

“Home births are absolutely safe and there are many studies that suggest that they are even safer than hospital births,” she said.

Ms Martin believes even if the changes come into play there will still be people who will choose to have a home birth with the assistance of a midwife while others will chose to “free birth” and deliver their baby without medical assistance.

Similar to anti-abortion legislation, Ms Martin said criminalising a midwife’s attendance at a home birth would push the practice underground.

Thankyou for covering this very important issue. This is a simply ludicrous piece of legislation by Ms Roxon that will undoubtedly force women into freebirthing. Homebirth is an option that should be available to every woman. It is not just so-called 'hippies' who want to bring their babies into the world this way, but is a proven safe 'method of delivery' when an independent midwife is in attendance. I would choose homebirth anyday over a hospital birth. I support this protest and will be attending Canberra to stand up and be counted.

Too right and not before time. But I don't want the practice pushed underground. Couldn't be too hygenic with all the diesel equipment running around not to mention all those grubby unwashed miners staring at you as you're dropping a spud.

Once I would have thought women stupid having home birth's, mainly due to unexpected medial complications but 2 kid's later, both delivered at OBH. I honestly believe you would be just as well off having your baby under a tree in Cook Park than at the OBH Maternity. It's dirty, rundown and constantly understaffed.

This woman's claims are complete fabrications. Firstly, there is absolutely no evidence in existence showing homebirth is safer than hospital birth. Some studies suggest that a baby is three times more likely to die during a homebirth than in a hospital. If these people actually cared about women's rights, they would be fighting for the right of women around the world to have access to medical care for birth instead of facing the risk of death and serious injury.

What about the right of a baby to emergency medical attention if they need it? Since when did a mother's right to brag about her candlelit home birth and post a video of it on You Tube become more important than having a healthy baby? I think it's important to remember that the head of the Joyous Birth group in Australia lost her baby due to a lack of medical attention in a botched home birth. That somewhat negates the group's credibility in my mind.

how ridiculous. Illegal to give birth at home with a midwife at hand to help? what are these stupid politicians smoking? giving birth at a hospital is alot safer than home. too many women and their babies have died over many years at home. I for example, had a difficult birth, which doctors only had minutes to act on to save my baby and my life. emergency cecearean. You cant do this at home. But to fine people for deciding to give birth at home is insane. A theif gets of lighter than this.

i cant believe that any mother to be would risk having their baby at home! i have 2 kids and another on the way, if we were at home for our second she would not have made it. and for anyone to sugest that having your baby at home is somehow better or safer for the baby or the mother is crazy. people who choose to have their baby's at home do so for one reason only... that is for themselves. its selfish and wreckless and the baby has no choice! i feel for the poor kids who have parents like this because if a mother/father would risk there kids life before they are even born i can only imagine what sort of parents they will be.

You are forgetting that when these comments are made about homebirth being safe, it is reffering to low risk births. There are many occasions when a birth is low risk that it does not need any medical intervention at all. The midwife is there to notice before anything can go wrong and choose the appropriate action. These midwives are not just random people off the street. They are trained to know the complications. They know that not every women needs to be sent off to the hospital especially if she is comfortable where she is. A woman that goes into a birth knowing she is high risk and complications are very likely to arise and decides to stay at home may be called an idiot by some but a woman that wishes to make a choice and stay where she is comfortable, be a home or in a hospital, and knows she is low risk is an angel and the midwife that follows through with her journey is much the same.

While not everyone would choose a homebirth I think it's important to look at recent worldwide data that clearly shows mounting evidence that homebirth is safe. In fact homebirth is recommended by the World Health Organisation as the preferred method of birthing for low risk women. This is not about music and candlelight. This is about safety! And if you don't think babies die in hospitals then you're clearly dellusional! In fact, the stillborn rate is slightly higher in a hospital setting. What is overwhelming higher is the rates of unnecessary intervention which has been proven to increase the rate of caesarean section. Induction is the prime example, of which Orange Hospital boasts a rate of 60% of women. Do you really think 60% of women would never go into labour? Their reasoning is to reduce the rate of stillbirth & degradation of the placenta however the stillbirth rate is actually higher at 38 weeks than at 42 weeks. So why not induce at 38 weeks? Midwives are birth specialists and should have the right to provide women with care in their home. This is a basic human right.

Whether your high risk or low risk things can change in an instant. Who would want to put their babys life at risk? If i was in hospital giving birth and my child had died at least i know that i was in the best place i could be in for my child. I couldnt live with myself if i chose to have a home birth and my child died because of lack of emergency resourses. There is no choice when it comes to a childs life.
