A LOCAL pilot managed to free himself from the wreckage of a light plane that crashed at Orange Airport yesterday.
The 43-year-old man was landing the plane at about 5.45pm on Tuesday when the aircraft clipped the top of a hangar.
The plane nosedived, crashed into the tarmac and skidded into a shed, police say.
The pilot, the only occupant of the plane, managed to free himself from the wreckage despite sustaining head injuries.
He walked to a nearby hangar where he was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics.
He was taken to Orange Base Hospital for treatment.
The Air Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has been notified about the incident.
