Neighbours and friends for life

28 Mar, 2008 05:44 AM
THE saying “Love Thy Neighbour” has been a central philosophy of long-time neighbours Pam Platt and Bill Taylor.

The two long-term neighbours will be among several others in Orange who will celebrate Neighbour Day this Sunday.

Pam and Bill, who have been neighbours at their National Avenue homes for more than 30 years, say that while it can be rare to find a good neighbour, their street is an exception.

“We've always been great friends and all our neighbours are really good to us,” said Bill.

Pam added that having a good relationship with your neighbours also had other benefits.

“We eat all Bill's tomatoes and spinach when he's away,” she joked yesterday.

Neighbour Day first began following the discovery of a Melbourne woman in her home more than two years after her death, prompting Andrew Heslop to establish Neighbour Day as a way of increasing focus on the importance of neighbourly relationships.

“We often forget about those who live around us until we need their help in an emergency or there's some other problem at home. With increasingly busy lives, Neighbour Day brings our focus back to home,” he said.
