The annual celebration of the region’s food culture, now in its 21st year, was launched to a receptive crowd at the Orange Region Farmers’ Market on Saturday.
New events and old favourites fill a program which has an activity for everyone crammed into the week of April 13 to 22.
FOOD Week committee spokesperson Cynthia Jarratt said a highlight was the doubling in numbers from 350 to 700 for the Forage event, which was staged for the first time last year.
“The Department of Primary Industries is once again on board to sponsor the Forage event. It was a resounding success last year,” she said.
Forage, on Saturday April 21, is a 3.5 kilometre walk from Borenore to Nashdale with producers and Department of Primary Industries staff, with feasting on local food and wine along the way.
The popular FOOD Week Night Market in Robertson Park will have a Friday the 13th theme.
Mrs Jarratt said the FOOD Affair on Sunday, April 22 would receive some star power from Orange’s MasterChef winner, Kate Bracks.
“We’ve got Kate Bracks coming to the Producers’ Pantry at FOOD Affair. She’ll be demonstrating the tricks and techniques she learnt on MasterChef,” she said.
The loss of Essential Energy (previously Country Energy) as FOOD Affair’s major sponsor after 14 years of support has provided an additional challenge for organisers this year, with a major sponsor still sought.
“It’s great they were able to [sponsor it] for so long. It is becoming increasingly challenging to get sponsors for these community events,” Mrs Jarratt said.
