Molong residents get mobile with upgrade

09 Feb, 2010 07:57 AM
A NEW Next G base station has been installed in Molong in an effort to give locals improved mobile broadband coverage.

Telstra Country Wide Western NSW general manager Darren Smith said he had worked closely with Cabonne Council, the Molong community and Member for Calare John Cobb after residents and businesses lobbied for an upgraded service.

Mr Smith said the people of Molong would experience improved coverage with their Next G mobile phones and modems in Molong as a result of the new base station.

“This new coverage is the direct result of local customer feedback and will provide significant benefits to the local community and business,” he said.

Mr Cobb said the improved service would make life a little easier for those living in Molong.

“Obviously there is more to be done and I understand there are more sites around the region being looked at for upgrades but this is certainly proof that improvements are on their way,” he said.

Whilst this is a good thing to see happen it worries me that Molong are now set for the same fate as Orange and mysteriously all the ADSL ports in residential areas will now be "full", thus forcing people to use the often slower Next-G system. (By the way I am speaking from personal experience on this one)

nextg is faster than 1.5mb which is what most people can get in the area. Nextg just beats 1.5mb. The only bad thing about nextg is it is still too over priced. I pay 80 per month for 6 gigabytes. where as with optus you pay half as much. But that is because telstra uses better equipment and they have better coverage. The only problem with Molong and getting nextg is that most of the people there are farmers and there is a drought on. No one will be able to afford the prices.

I use Next G every day of my life, yes it is faster than 1.5mb after 11pm at night, but trying using it in the Orange CBD between 4-11pm or in North Orange between 730pm and midnight and most nights you will be lucky to get 40-50k downloads, sometimes it's just too busy and doesn't in 20-30 minute blocks. It's good, but it's most certainly not a reliable ADSL replacement. I'm all for it but they need to ensure the capacity is there, and I can tell you from experience in CBD and North Orange use that it is not there yet.
