Firefighters save the day but warn of future danger

20 Nov, 2009 07:54 AM
THE fire which claimed a substantial section of the pine forest plantation south of Mount Canobolas has now been contained with firefighters blacking out 24 hot spots yesterday.

The hot spots were detected thanks to an infrared device which was attached to a plane which flew over the area.

Rural Fire Service (RFS) incident controller David Hoadley said a grassfire which broke out in Manildra yesterday was also quickly extinguished.

“Ground crews rushed to the area immediately and extinguished it.”

With temperatures expected to sit around 35 degrees today and tomorrow, firefighters are gearing up for a busy weekend.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” he said.

“We’ll be keeping a close eye on it especially as the wind is expected to pick up.”

Tomorrow the official fire status rating is expected to drop from “contained” to “patrolled”.

The Forest NSW crews from Lismore, Newcastle, Forbes, Casino, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Walcha, Wauchope, Maitland and Sydney returned to their home bases yesterday having spent several days helping local crews.
