A 23-year-old man led highway patrol officers on a high speed chase and then swapped seats with his girlfriend to make it look as if she was driving, police allege.
Andrew James Dixon, of Attunga Place, was arrested on Friday night after a 135-kilometre pursuit to the west of Orange during which he was allegedly driving a 1975 model Toyota Lexcen.
Dixon was refused bail before the Local Court this week and pleaded not guilty to the offences, which include dangerous driving and driving while disqualified from holding a licence.
Solicitor Bob Lulham said his client was willing to report daily to police and abide by curfew conditions if he was released on bail.
“My client instructs me that he was not the driver of the motor vehicle. It’s a matter where significant evidence will have to be considered,” he said.
Dixon is also charged with offences prior to the alleged car chase.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Andy Bobin opposed bail, saying the prosecution case against Dixon was strong.
“These are serious allegations. He was putting the lives of himself, his children and his de-facto at risk,” he said.
Sergeant Bobin said police officers had seen Dixon driving the car during the chase and watched him change seats with his partner before getting out of the car.
Magistrate Terry Lucas refused bail, saying Dixon had already been on bail at the time of the alleged new offences.
All the matters were adjourned to March 27.
