THE RSPCA’s dog adoption program will remain closed until next week following a confirmed case of the highly contagious parvovirus.
RSPCA animal attendant Marissa Clifford said the organisation’s vet had recommended the facility remain closed for at least two weeks until he could confirm all of the 11 dogs housed at the centre were healthy.
“Everything is travelling well but we will keep the dog adoption row closed until (at least) Tuesday next week,” she said.
“We’ve had a lot of enquiries from people wanting to adopt a dog so we’ve just been taking details and will call them when the dogs are ready.”
A stray terrier that was admitted to the facility more than a week ago was found to have the deadly virus and immediately placed in quarantine.
Canobolas Family Pet Hospital veterinarian Geoff Freeth said despite the RSPCA’s case, local dog owners seemed to be getting the message about the importance of vaccinating their pets.
“Parvo is one of those things where if a dog is vaccinated then it won’t get it,” he said.
“While we used to see a few cases of it a year it’s becoming a rare thing ... we have a high rate of vaccination amongst our clients.”
