Council paves the way for taxis

20 Nov, 2009 07:58 AM
ORANGE City Council has begun construction work at the Anson Street taxi rank to allow space for two taxis north of the crossing near Woolworths.

Council briefly put a traffic detour in place yesterday while workers poured concrete at the site.

The new taxi rank will be raised to footpath level to assist pedestrians with shopping trolleys.

Council will also install handrails and two pedestrian benches at the site.

Team leader Clint Kelly said he anticipated the work would be completed by the middle of next week and that the refurbishments would cause little to no delays for drivers.

“There’s no delays and taxis are still running,” Mr Kelly said.

Mr Kelly said the work would allow for better access to the site for both taxi drivers and pedestrians.

The refurbishments come after Orange City Council and Orange Taxi Co-Op reached a compromise on work at the site in June.
