OLYMPIAN Archie Thompson leads the list of nine Bathurst sportspeople to be honoured this afternoon for representing their country.
Nine new names will be added to the Bathurst District Sport and Recreation Council's (BDSRC) International Sports Honour Board at a ceremony in the Bathurst council chambers from 5pm.
Each has represented Australia and, according to Peter Cole from the BDSRC, each deserves the accolade.
“This is an event that doesn't come around very often,” Mr Cole said. “We've got representatives ranging from cycling, rowing, hockey, triathlon, motorcycle racing and soccer.”
Thompson is currently in China with Australia's Olyroos soccer squad and will begin his Olympics campaign against Serbia on Thursday.
Mr Cole said he would be joined on the honour board by other well-known sportspeople, including cyclists Mark Renshaw and Toireasa Gallagher (nee Ryan).
“Mark has three junior world championship titles and just competed in the Tour of France while Toireasa's off to the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing,” he said.
“She competed for Australia at the Cycling World Championships in the Netherlands in 1998 and has performed at an international level since.”
Mr Cole said offroad motorcycle stars Ben and Damien Grabham had represented Australia on many occasions with gold medal performances in enduro events.
Triathlete Richard Hobson's national selection for the world championships in Canada in 1992 earned him a nomination while rower Catriona Roach (nee Thompson) achieved national honours for the World Cup regattas and world championships in 2000 and 2001.
Kevin MacDonald received his nomination as a motorcycling clerk of the course at the 2000 FIM 500cc World Motocross Championship in Victoria, while hockey star Matt Naylor is also on the list.
