The comments come following the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s annual review into taxi fares which has seen the New South Wales Taxi Drivers’ Association suggest telephone booking fees rise from a minimum $2.10 to $4, while the flagfall charge be bumped from 80 cents to $4.
Local taxi drivers do not feel such a large jump in price is necessary, but say prices should remain affordable while still covering running costs.
Orange residents currently pay $3.70 for a booking fee.
“There is a formula to looking at the increasing costs we are under,” director of Taxi Cabs of Orange Peter Cudars said.
“The charge at the moment is usually quite sufficient.
“I believe the current system is good and we don’t need an increase.”
Orange is very supportive of the city’s taxi system and residents would pay for a small increase of up to four per cent, says local taxi owner and operator Pat Mullins.
“Most people would be happy to pay it for a good service,” Mr Mullins said.
He added that the increase of other living expenses, especially electricity, would have an impact on the taxi service if prices were to greatly increase.
