Butt out, Lee

THE NSW Greens have come under fire for wading into a dispute between Orange City Council and the city’s largest employer, Cadia Valley Operations.

Orange City Council yesterday went on the attack over comments by NSW Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon about the future supply of treated effluent to the mine.

In an interview with a local TV station earlier this week, the Greens mining spokesperson claimed Cadia Valley Operations was trying to exploit a decade-old agreement to avoid paying for the effluent over the next two decades.

Ms Rhiannon’s comments infuriated council and were even rebuffed by a member of her own party, Orange councillor Neil Jones.

Cr Jones said he was “surprised Lee Rhiannon has commented on what appears to be an issue currently before the legal teams of Cadia and Orange City Council”.

The city’s other Greens councillor Jeremy Buckingham was also accused of bringing politics into negotiations between Cadia and Orange City Council over the treated effluent.

“The Greens are good at creating havoc because they’ll never be in a position of power to have the responsibility to make such serious decisions,” Cr Jeff Whitton said.

Cr Buckingham denied he was playing politics and defended Ms Rhiannon’s right to comment on the matter.

“I think it was completely appropriate for Lee to be involved and make a comment. I mean, come on, she’s a respected member of Parliament and has been our mining spokesperson for the better part of a decade,” he said.

“And as for Jeff, he represents the NSW Labor Party, a party about to be thrown out of government because when they did have the power to make a decision they totally cocked up the state.”

Mayor Reg Kidd and councillors Glenn Taylor and Gavin Priestley also questioned Ms Rhiannon’s motives in a statement released yesterday.

The highly political statement, prepared by Orange City Council, was dismissed by Ms Rhiannon.

“What comes across to me is that those councillors are not doing their jobs. If they were, they would be standing up to Newcrest and supporting locals who are going to be left with serious problems for centuries,” she said.

Let me get this straight. The council is spending rate payers money on legal action to force Cadia to pay for waste water that was previously released into local creeks. Now the idiot greens come stomping in. If Cadia says OK we don't want your water what will council do with it? I don't want to drink it. Will the greens be worried about this environmental concern or isn't it politically hefty enough.

No offence councilors but you know where you can put your stickers! Right on Osama Bin Laden's car. Maybe if the mines keep digging they will find him down there somewhere.

I think this article shows the true colours of the whole Cadia operation. They want it their way all of the time and they don't care who they have to walk over to get their water for the precious gold mine.

oh my god supe, the precious gold mine is what is keeping orange a thriving town, you people that are whinging don't understand if the mine is not here all of our businesses will probably go under because the mining people keep us going, i like that i can rely on a good income, and most of the people spend the money in our community, i hope they keep digging deeper for "osama" as you put it and it takes 30 years, because most smart people know there is heaps more gold down in the depths

It's a last attempt at making the Greens relevant, but this party is going the same way as the Democrats - political extinction. Vote 1 autocratic dictatorship by union backed power brokers.

this water was going to waste before the mine started using it, if they take it away from cadia it will go to waste again. the greens as usual have no idea what they are talking about just like the 3 whingers on here who complain about everything that is good for this town.

mk i am allowed an opinion like yourself. When i moved to orange in 1987 it was coping okay with minimal mining activity. Have you got shares in newcrest!!

james.. not sure if you have noticed mate but its 2009 not 1987, times change , towns change but obviously some people dont! i'm not saying you cant have your opinion but it frustrates me when they are all negitive and that they are all miss- informed opinions, and to answer your question, yes i do. and so do you in a sense as everyone in orange relies on the direct or indirect money generated by this mine being here. wether you realise that or not.
