BREAKING NEWS - NINE YEAR OLD STUDENT KILLED IN ORANGE

29 Jan, 2010 07:24 AM
THE first day of the school year has been marred by tragedy, with an eight year old boy killed after being struck by a car in Orange yesterday afternoon.

Police believe the boy was attempting to cross Racecourse Road, near the Banksia Street intersection, when he was struck by an eastbound Mazda Tribute.

The boy was thrown an unknown distance and suffered serious head and chest injuries.

He was rushed to Orange Base Hospital in a critical condition but died overnight during emergency surgery.

It's believed the boy was a student at the nearby Calare Public School.

The 33 year old female driver of the vehicle stopped immediately and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Police from the Canobolas Local Area Command and Chifley Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene to carry out an investigation.

Police are urging witnesses to the accident to contact Orange detectives on 6363 6399 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 33 000.

The child's death is the fourth tragedy to strike Orange in less than a week.

On Saturday, 33 year old Darlene Ambrose was killed during a two vehicle accident near Lucknow.

On Wednesday, 19 year-old former Kinross Wolaroi School students Eliza Wannan and Will Dalton-Brown died from injuries sustained from a camping accident near Orange.

As a mother in the area this sends shock waves through me. My 6 year old also goes to Calare. We refuse to let him cross this road. How can we unite together to get something done about this dangerous road ? Previous letters to council have fallen on deaf ears. Surely this boys death should not be in vane. My heart goes out to this boys family and friends. LETS DO SOMETHING TO PREVENT ANOTHER TRAGEDY.

This has touched me deeply, it's like a nightmare come to life and there are no words to explain how or why this has happened. This is a tragedy for all concerned. My heart goes out to the family of the boy, and the driver and my prayers are with them both.

This is a very sad story and as parent, it turns my stomach. Sadly, im very suprised that more lives have not been lost. It is daily practice for childs, students and parent with prams to walk uop the side of the road given there are no foot paths! OCC - do something to make our schools and neighbourhoods safe for our children

I'm a parent of a 9 year old Calare student, and I don't have any words to express how sad I feel. I've very tempted to get a couple cans of white paint and paint a pedestrian crossing myself.

I am astonished at the comments posted by Dave M.....yes this is very sad, but why turn it into a complaint against the OCC??? It is the parents choice to walk and allow their children to walk up the sides of the roads and most motorists in Orange would be aware of this and drive accordingly. Why is it up to OCC to do something about it? Are you going to pay highly inflated rates to pay for footpaths and their maintenance which would be exhorbitant in this town if we are to retain our street trees and the character of the whole town? Enough ranting by me, but I just feel your comment was out of place. This is a tragic accident for all involved and the whole Calare school community, of which I am a part. Our prayers and support are there for all affected by this tragedy.....

The comment about footpaths is well made. I don't know the circumstances of this tragedy, but in general how does a parent teach their children to stay off the road while simultaneously walking along the road with them? Comments about street trees are as spurious as saying that half of the people in the city are of below-average intelligence so why have a library ...
