Bid to block pipeline project fails

Bid to block pipeline project fails

22 Oct, 2011 03:00 AM
A MOTION to axe the Macquarie pipeline has been defeated, but councillors against the project say they will lobby for greater investigation of alternative water schemes.

The proposal, led by deputy mayor Jeff Whitton, was defeated four votes to seven in front of a packed public gallery at Orange City Council’s meeting on Thursday night.

After two hours of debate, which included seven speeches by residents, councillors John Davis, Chris Gryllis, Fiona Rossiter, Jason Hamling, Gavin Priestley, Peter Hetherington and Sam Romano voted to continue with the project.

“It was a debate we had to have,” Cr Davis said yesterday.

“I think there was respect on all sides and I don’t think we’re all that far apart.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder in that we all want to fix Orange’s water.”

Cr Davis said defeat of the motion had made him “more confident than ever” that Orange’s water would be secured in the next 12 to 18 months.

“This is too important a subject to play with,” he said.

“All of the councillors were supportive two and a half years ago, we all took that challenge up.”

Deputy mayor Jeff Whitton said he was disappointed the motion had failed, but the result was as expected.

“I thought the councillors who spoke for the motion to abandon the Macquarie pipeline spoke very well and in great detail,” he said.

“While they’re 100 per cent in favour of securing Orange’s water, they thought the Macquarie pipeline is not a key option and that the council is putting all its eggs into it as a silver bullet when it hasn’t got the community support.”

Cr Whitton said he would now focus on making sure Orange City Council closely investigated alternative water supply options while it was developing its pipeline proposal.

“As part of the process we have to supply alternatives to the pipeline,” he said.

“I’ll be ensuring those other options are getting as much attention and effort from council staff as the pipeline is getting.”

The voting is in the decision has been made like all countries who are a democracy,it's done and dusted.

Our right to vote in a democracy will come in 12 months time .... Rossiter,Davis,Gryllis,Hamling,Priestley,Hetherington and Romano. Will never be sitting side by side again ...... And that is my right to decide, because we live in a democracy just like them !!!

This fraction on our Council must be spilt and dissolved,if not, then we live in a dictatorship !!!

maybe the council could approach sydney & brisbane councils to see if they can hook up to the squillion dollar desalination plants they aren't using?

now there's a plan.........

I think Orange is Screwed. I am a 4th generation ratepayer & believe the MINES have ruined this town. I am leaving with my family to a more civilised community.....BYE BYE!!

How many on council can say they their families have lived here for 4 generations, yet they seem to know what is best!

Heard Davis' interview on ABC in which he stated the rayepayers are not for securing Orange,s water supply.

That is arrant nonsense, crap, BS, and outright false. The actual majority we are aware of are 100% in favour of securing water for our city, BUT believe the pipeline is not the answer, only one of several options, most of which are being avoided by council as they focus entirely on the mayors option alone.

Basic question is, how do you draw water ftom a river in times of drought, which is Davis' one eyed option. Obvious answer is you cant. That is the problem.

So can I please see the annual cost per ratepayer to build this pipeline AND keep it running each year?? All the argument seem to be on other grounds, I've seen NOTHING about what I am expected to pay for this water.

Personally I'm not fussed if we are stealing some other town's water, but this Council is showing the usual arrogance that gets people kicked out in the next election. Lots of "its all OK, we know what we're doing" and "we know better than you, we're the Council"

Always a bad sign.

at no time in this debate has there ever been a real figure given to run and maintain this pipeline or any resstrictions that may be in place as to when water can be pumped from the river. a bit like the stormwater harvesting, great idea but the restriction make it almost unusable.

I have done excavation work in the area of the pipeline and unless it is going to be run on top of the ground the costing for the project will blow out greatly as the proposed route is through some very rocky country.

All a stunt by Whitton, Taylor , Kidd and Jones.

I bet Whitton didnt let everyone know this before the Deputy Mayoral election.

Water security is a debate that Orange had have? I think that debate has been going on forv 30 years or more, Get on with it and deliver all options so our City can grow.

Nice new dam on the bypass road we could tap into in times of drought. It's all reedy half full. That water would have ended up in Summa park anyway.
